Brief Instruction of School

Our school district includes Siangtan and Kihu, two villages consisting of three communities. There are 478 families with a total of 1780 people in Siangtan. Kihu has 1480 residents from 340 families. The economy depends largely on agriculture. People are sincere and humble, and live a simple life. They are not in financial need and have good quality of life.

We are located at the foot of Thaiwu Mountain at South Pingtung. Originally, it belonged to Kiho Village and Siangtan Village of Chauchou County. It was an area of about 3000 hectares. There were over 1300 people residing in all of the villages, including Kihu, Siangtan, Wanlung, Shito, Haifongleao, Tongan, and Chinsun. A sudden storm in 1933 caused a serious mudslide from Thaiwu Mountain and a flood from Laiyi River. Two thousand hectares of land were lost in that flood. The residents lost all their estates and were forced to move.

In 1930, to prevent new floods, embankments were built along the north bank of Laiyi River and the south bank of Lili River. However, for years the embankments burst every time there was flooding and mudslides. The deluges brought rocks and sand into many of the farmlands near the mountain. The residents could not grow crops in the rock-strewn fields, so most of them moved to other places.

Taiwan Sugar Corporation established Shinwau Farm near Laiyi River and Lili River in 1930, but it only increased cheap employment. The employees suffered from low salaries. In addition, this area is surrounded by Thaiwu Mountain (on the east side) and the two rivers. During the rainy season, this area was totally isolated unless people were willing to risk their lives by walking through the water. Fortunately, with the efforts of the local people, this problem was solved when the government built the Siangtan Bridge in 1980. However, there was neither fertile land nor specialized products to increase family income. Many people in need of work had to move to areas with factories. Accordingly, the number of classes in our school gradually decreased from 15 to 7.

Three newly-built transportation systems have brought life to the local economy. They are Yensun Highway (built in 1993), the 560-meter Kihu Bridge (built in August 1996), and the road between Singbi and Siangtan. Additionally, because of the economic recession, people began to move back to their hometowns. The number of school-age children has increased. Also, because the government is applying the “Small-Class Policy” to elementary schools, our school has increased by two classes. The quality of our school has rapidly increased with the improvements in educational policies and the improvements in our communities.
